Isotopic assessment of NO3 and SO4 2 mobility during winter in two adjacent watersheds in the Adirondack Mountains, New York

چکیده
[1] Biogeochemical cycling of N and S was examined at two watersheds in the Adirondack Mountains, New York, to better understand the retention and loss of these elements during winter and spring snowmelt. We analyzed stable isotope compositions of NO3 (dN-NO3 , dO-NO3 ) and SO4 2 (dS-SO4 2 , dO-SO4 2 ), along with concentrations and fluxes of NO3 and SO4 2 , in precipitation, throughfall, snowpack, snowmelt, soil water, groundwater, and stream water. Isotopic results showed no evidence of NO3 and SO4 2 transformations in the forest canopy and snowpack; however, markedly decreased dO values of NO3 and SO4 2 in forest floor water suggest that microbial processing occurred in organic soil horizons. Similarly low dO values of NO3 and SO4 2

Impacts of changing climate and atmospheric deposition on N and S drainage losses from a forested watershed of the Adirondack Mountains, New York State
Biogeochemical responses to changing climate and atmospheric deposition were investigated using nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) mass balances, including dry deposition and organic solutes in the Arbutus Lake watershed in the Adirondack Mountains, New York State. Long-term monitoring of wet-only precipitation (NADP/NTN, 1983–2001) and dry deposition (AIRMoN, 1990–2001) at sites adjacent to the water...
متن کاملResponse of surface water chemistry to reduced levels of acid precipitation: comparison of trends in two regions of New York, USA
In light of recent reductions in sulphur (S) and nitrogen (N) emissions mandated by Title IV of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, temporal trends and trend coherence in precipitation (1984–2001 and 1992–2001) and surface water chemistry (1992–2001) were determined in two of the most acid-sensitive regions of North America, i.e. the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains of New York. Precipitatio...
متن کاملChemical response of lakes in the Adirondack Region of New York to declines in acidic deposition.
Long-term changes in the chemistry of wet deposition and lake water were investigated in the Adirondack Region of New York. Marked decreases in concentrations of SO4(2-) and H+ in wet deposition have occurred at two sites since the late 1970s. These decreases are consistent with long-term declines in emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the eastern United States. Changes in wet NO3- deposition ...
متن کاملA field-based study of soil water and groundwater nitrate release in an Adirondack forested watershed
[1] Nitrate (NO3 ) movement was studied using a combination of isotopic, chemical, and hydrometric data within the 135 ha Archer Creek watershed in the Adirondack Mountains of New York from January 1995 to December 1996. This research was conducted to identify sources of stream water NO3 and the mechanisms that deliver NO3 to the stream to test two hypotheses: (1) Soil water NO3 concentrations ...
متن کاملNitrogen input–output budgets for lake-containing watersheds in the Adirondack region of New York
The Adirondack region of New York is characterized by soils and surface waters that are sensitive to inputs of strong acids, receiving among the highest rates of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition in the United States. Atmospheric N deposition to Adirondack ecosystems may contribute to the acidification of soils through losses of exchangeable basic cations and the acidification of surface wate...
